Drill Team

Ulysses A Motorcycle Drill Team.

The team was established in 2010 to perform at Charity events, to improve our slow riding skills provide some entertainment at charity events.

Motorcycle Drill Teams are very popular in America and other Countries. They are nothing new, they have been around for many years, and many are performed by Police and Armed Force Departments to improve the slow riding skills. Others like ours are run by motorcycle clubs and open to anybody who wants to improve their slow riding skills. Several Motorcycle Clubs in USA have their own annual competitions while others in USA were put together just to perform at charity events.

History: The first Ulysses A Motorcycle Drill Team included six riders and performed a routine of just over six minutes. Each year the team has grown in numbers and the routine has become more difficult with more complicated moves. Every year the intention is to try very hard to change most performances to the public just a little so those watching never see the same thing and have no idea what comes next. In 2014 it included as many as 11 riders for two performances and took over eleven minutes. Some moves are included every year however many are only used once, it really depends on the reaction of the public.

Name: Why are we called the Ulysses A motorcycle drill team? Firstly we all belong to the Ulysses Motorcycle Club. The A could stand for Auckland or it could stand the first team in Australasia or it could just be the fact we are the top team in NZ, that could have something to do with we are the only team.

Area: When we first started it was really hard to find a suitable venue to practice let alone perform in so a decision was made to have the area large enough to do some tricky moves yet small enough that we could possibly perform on road blocked off. The size chosen is still today 28 metres  x 18m with preferably a 1.5m safety barrier. It is important that we have an almost flat smooth surface to perform on. It would be nice to have a larger area like many American Teams perform in however we will settle for what we have.

Membership: The team is always on the lookout for new members. If anybody is interested in joining all we ask is you have a tidy reliable road legal bike and be prepared to turn up to practice every week during the season for practice. The team is more than just a group who ride around in never ending circles each week but have our own socials as it is important that everyone gets to know all others in the team. Over the years we have had bikes ranging in size 2.3litre Triumph Rockets too Suzuki GN125. Who cares we are the Ulysses Club.

Demonstration: In the Auckland area we are prepared to perform no charge at charity events, other events we ask for a donation to go towards our favourite charity. At events out of Auckland we appreciate a small donation to go towards petrol costs to and from the event.

Sponsorship: Almost all Motorcycle Drill Teams outside the Police Teams overseas have sponsors, this is still the one thing our team is lacking. It would be great if we had a uniform. If anybody can help us please contact any member of the team. If an amount was sufficient enough then a sponsor could have naming writes.

Like any sport or hobby all it takes is dedication, once a member of the Ulysses A Motorcycle Drill Team you are always be part of the team in some way.
