Ten riders on a beautiful day today. Kevin Piper took us to a place I've ridden past before but never stopped at: Kaniwhaniwha Reserve, on Limeworks Loop Road near Pirongia. Kāniwhaniwha means "a deep dark pool". The Nikau Walk, part of the Te Araroa walking trail, goes from here to the summit of Mt Pirongia, which takes 8+ hours. None of us had that time to spare today, although we didn't do any of the shorter walks also available. Some of us did explore the Kaniwhaniwha Stream which flows through the reserve. It's a very pretty spot. Lunch at the Village Cafe in Whatawhata afterwards.
